How are turnbuckles used?

A turnbuckle is a common rigging device that is used to adjust the tension or length of cables, reduce the level of slack in ropes, and for many other tensioning applications. The tension delivered is controlled by rotating the frame of the turnbuckle.

Examples of their use can range from a residential property fence to major bridge construction. Turnbuckles are also sometimes known as bottle or stretching screws. Other of their many uses include the tensioning of ropes around a wrestling ring (with added padding), and even in some orthopedic splints.
